Claris FileMaker Licensing for UK Businesses
Buying, renewing and right-sizing in 2026
A UK Claris Partner’s plain-English guide to Claris FileMaker licensing — the five licence shapes (Site, Annual User, Volume, Cloud, Concurrent Connections), the Starter and Max tiers introduced under the 2025 unified model, and how to right-size at renewal without overspending. No published rates: we quote against your specific situation, not a headline list.
The Short Version (read this first)
Since 2025, a single Claris FileMaker licence covers the full platform — FileMaker Pro, Server or Cloud, Go, Claris Studio and Claris Connect — bundled together at a Starter or Max tier. You then choose the licence shape(Site, Annual User, Volume, Cloud or Concurrent Connections) depending on how your team is structured. A Partner’s job is right-sizing both the tier and the shape, so you’re on the cheapest combination that genuinely fits.
How To Think About A
FileMaker purchase or renewal
The Claris FileMaker platform is licensed annually, with renewal cycles aligned to the original purchase date. You can buy direct through a Claris account, or through a Claris Partner like Smart Wolf. A Partner brings impartial advice on tier (Starter or Max), shape, timing and what’s already bundled — useful when the difference between a fitting licence and a wasteful one is a five-minute conversation.
For new buyers, the conversation usually starts with two questions: how many people genuinely need to log in, and how stable is that count. The answers point you towards Site, Annual User or Volume — and they sometimes reveal that what you actually need is a Connections licence for a low-touch web portal, rather than full named users.
For renewals, the conversation is about right-sizing. Headcount changes, teams move between projects, and the licence shape that fitted three years ago often isn’t the cheapest one fitting now. We’ll review your current shape against your real usage and tell you honestly whether it’s still right — even if the honest answer is ‘keep it as is’.
Claris FileMaker
licence shapes - side by side
Annual User Licence
Per named user, billed annually, with a minimum of 5 users and increments of 1. Scales linearly with headcount and is the simplest shape when user counts are stable and known. Includes FileMaker Pro, Server, Go and the bundled Claris Studio and Claris Connect allowances at your chosen tier.
FileMaker Cloud
The Claris-hosted option — no self-managed FileMaker Server. Configured as Cloud Starter or Cloud Max (renamed from Cloud Essentials / Cloud Standard in 2025), with the corresponding Claris Studio and Connect allowances. A good fit for teams that don't want to run infrastructure themselves.
Volume Licence (AVLA / VLA)
For larger deployments with predictable user growth — typically mid-market and enterprise. Available as Annual Volume Licence Agreement (AVLA) or perpetual Volume Licence Agreement (VLA). Can be more cost-effective than Annual User at scale, especially when Claris Studio and Claris Connect usage is meaningful.
Site Licence
Covers everyone in a defined site or organisation. Available as an annual subscription or as a perpetual licence with a minimum of 25 users. Often the most predictable shape when user counts fluctuate or contractors and seasonal staff need access.
Partner Or Direct to Claris?
The Honest Answer
Buying direct from Claris is straightforward and works fine — you log into your Claris account, you renew, you continue. The pricing list you see is the same pricing list a Partner sees.
A Partner adds value on three fronts: right-sizing (Site vs Annual User vs Volume, whether you’re overpaying), renewal timing (aligning with budget cycles, not Claris’s default anniversary), and bundled entitlements (knowing what Claris Connect and Claris Studio coverage you already have before you buy them again somewhere else).
Smart Wolf is happy either way. We’ll act as your reseller of record if that’s useful — single point of contact, invoiced in sterling, aligned with the rest of your FileMaker support and managed hosting. Or we’ll just give you the advice and let you renew direct. There’s no pressure to consolidate everything with us.

Pre-Renewal
Checklist
Before your next FileMaker renewal date, walk through these five questions. Five minutes here often saves a year of overpaying.
- Count your real users — not your max-ever or your hopeful peak, but how many people genuinely log in this month.
- List the connections you actually need — web portals, integrations, mobile-only users — they may not all need full named-user licences.
- Check what Claris Connect and Claris Studio coverage you're already entitled to under your current shape.
- Note your renewal date and whether you want to align it with budget cycles or financial year-end.
- Decide whether you want Smart Wolf to manage renewal as your Partner, or whether you'll renew direct and use us for advice only.
If any of those are ambiguous or you’d like a second pair of eyes, get in touch — we’ll run through your shape on a free consultation and write up the recommendation honestly, whether or not we end up reselling the licence.
How Smart Wolf
Helps With Licensing

We’ve been a Claris (formerly FileMaker, Inc.) Partner for over a decade, and we hold Cyber Essentials certification — useful context when the same conversation needs to cover both licensing and security review.
The shape of the engagement depends on what you actually want:
- Advice only. A free consultation, a written recommendation on the right licence shape, and you renew direct with Claris. No charge.
- Reseller of record. We handle the renewal, invoiced in sterling, with a single point of contact for licensing, hosting and support. Useful if you want all your Claris-related touchpoints in one place.
- Audit before renewal. A short engagement where we review your current shape, your real-world usage, and your roadmap — and produce a one-page recommendation. Best for organisations renewing 50+ users or moving between shapes.
Claris FileMaker Licensing
questions from UK buyers
Do I have to buy Claris FileMaker through a Partner?
No — Claris sells direct, and you can renew direct through your Claris account. The reason most UK businesses go through a Partner is impartial right-sizing advice: a Partner sees what your team actually needs, which licence shape fits, and where Claris Connect or Claris Studio entitlements already cover the next thing you were about to buy separately.
What's actually included in a 2026 Claris FileMaker licence?
Under the 2025 unified licensing model, a current Claris FileMaker licence covers the full platform — FileMaker Pro, FileMaker Server (self-hosted) or FileMaker Cloud (Claris-hosted), FileMaker Go on iPad and iPhone, Claris Studio for web layers, and Claris Connect for workflow automation. Studio and Connect are now provisioned with the licence rather than bought separately — but the amount you get depends on the tier (Starter or Max) you choose.
What's the difference between Site, Annual User, Volume and Cloud licences?
Site licensing covers everyone in a defined site or organisation — useful when user counts fluctuate or are hard to count. Annual User licensing is per named user and scales linearly. Volume licensing covers larger deployments with predictable user growth. FileMaker Cloud is the Claris-hosted option (Cloud Starter or Cloud Max) where you don't want to run FileMaker Server yourself. The right choice depends on how your team is structured, how stable user counts are, and whether you want to self-host — we'll talk you through them impartially.
Can I move from one licence shape to another at renewal?
Yes. Renewal is the natural point to right-size — if user counts have grown, dropped or stabilised, we'll talk you through whether Site, Annual User or Volume fits next year better than this year. Claris's pricing tiers update annually, so it's worth a five-minute conversation rather than auto-renewing the same shape.
I'm running an older version of FileMaker. Can I still buy a current licence?
Yes — Claris continues to sell current licences regardless of which version you're running today, and the licence covers the latest version. Whether to actually upgrade is a separate conversation, and we'll be honest about whether it's worth doing now or waiting. See our guide to supporting legacy Claris FileMaker for the calm-state view.
Will you give me a price?
We'll quote against your specific situation after a short conversation — headline list rates from Claris rarely match what a UK business actually pays once Site versus User, renewal timing, and bundled entitlements are factored in. Pricing is not displayed on this page on purpose; it belongs in a tailored proposal.
